Social Studies Record Release Party This Saturday, West Coast Tour Dates!!

Social Studies Record Release Party!Alright!

Social Studies‘ debut album, Wind Up Wooden Heart, is a hit, with some great new reviews rolling in, including a choice entry over at All Music Guide, to wit:  “An epic flair that suggests Ben Hur transformed into an indie pop operetta.” Whoah.

The album has also made editor’s picks over at digital retailers iTunes and 7digital (I might add that for a limited time, you can pick up a high quality MP3 version at 7Digital for under $7!) as well as indie mail order super store, Insound. Of course, you can also grab a copy right here at the Antenna Farm store. Orders ship next day, and come with a free poster. And for a limited time, we’re offering a 15% discount on ALL purchases through the AF store, just enter promo code “windup” at checkout! So if you haven’t yet, head on over to the AF Store!

But Social Studies have not just produced a great album, they are also an excellent live act. To put it succinctly, they are ace bunny-killers and tougher than leather.  And you can quote us on that. While getting ready for a full US tour in October, the band is playing their All Ages record release party in San Francisco this Saturday (August 7th) at the Rickshaw Stop with local heroes Maus Haus, 60 Watt Kid, and Montra. This show will likely sell out, so get advance tix here. For more info on the show, and to see which of your friends are already going, check the Book of Faces.

Social Studies will follow up the show this Saturday with a short run up and down the West Coast, including a couple of stops at some of our fave record stores for in-store performances (check out Millennium Music in Portland, and Origami Vinyl in Los Angeles!). If you have not yet checked this band live, drop what you’re doing, change your plans, and get on it! Tour dates below!

Wind Up Wooden Heart In Stores Today!

Social Studies Street Team!Yes!

Today marks the official release date for the Social Studies debut album Wind Up Wooden Heart, and it is in stores now!

WUWH is one of our favorite releases of 2010, but don’t take our word for it! The album has been called “Infectiously Catchy” by NME.com, RCRD.LBL declares “Excellent. Social Studies make twee sound brawny. Who else does that?“, and 7×7 Magazine says “Listen once and be mesmerized by catchy hooks and mellifluous choruses. Revisit it and you’ll find lyrics that strike chords of nostalgia, regret, renewal and joy….You’ll be hooked.

You can get your copy today from a variety of sources. Of course our first recommendation is your local record store, which you should be supporting anyway if you like music! Seattle folks can find copies at Sonic Boom or Easy Street, in Portland head over to Music Millenium (and watch for an in-store appearance there next month!) and in the Bay Area, head over to SF institution Aquarius, the folks who are also presenting the Social Studies record release party next week. Copies are also available at all California Amoebas and Rasputin’s locations. If you order from Insound, you can get a free poster with your order, while supplies last.

Of course, if digital is your thing, you can find a copy at itunes, Amazon, emusic, or your favorite digital retailer.

And yes, Wind Up Wooden Heart is also available at the Antenna Farm Store, where you can take advantage of a 15% discount on ALL orders (just use promo code “windup” at checkout) plus a free poster while supplies last. So what are you waiting for? Get on it!

Social Studies Head East!

Social Studies SF Popfest1Wow. We caught an amazing show Thursday night, as Social Studies pretty much killed it, opening for Tune-Yards at the Rickshaw Stop, part of this year’s SF Popfest. This band just gets better and better, and their new guitarist Tom has definitely bumped the chemistry level up to ‘imminent explosion’.

They are mid-way through a string of tour dates, and are headed east to Chicago, their first show on this leg is tonight, at Kilby Court in Salt Lake City. Mormons, Mile-High types, and Mid-westerners, you’ve been warned! More photos from Thursday night’s show and tour dates below. Excelsior!

Hey Bay Area peoples! Catch a couple of Antenna Farm bands playing this week as part of the SF Popfest!

Thursday night, Antenna Farm’s newest act, Social Studies, return to SF after a couple of weeks of west coast touring, to support the excellent tUnE-yArDs. The great Eux Autres are also on the bill, it should be a great night. For more info, click here.

Then, on Saturday night, Still Flyin’ opens for a reunion of the All Girl Summer Fun Band. Still Flyin’ has been burning up the UK and just played the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival; they have a couple of new singles that are great, and this is going to be a killer show. More info here.

Social Studies West Coast & Midwest Tour Dates!

Social Studies Spring Tour 2010San Francisco’s Social Studies take a break from prepping for the release of their debut album, Wind Up Wooden Heart (out in late July on Antenna Farm) to play some west coast and midwest shows starting this weekend.

Notable stops include the Silverlake Jubilee Festival in Los Angeles, The Subterranean in Chicago, and Porterpalooza on the UCSC campus, but the show we’re most excited about over here at the AF Headquarters is the Sunday show in Fresno, and it’s not just because they’re playing with buzz band Rademacher. No, it’s because they’re playing Audie’s Olympic, which we last saw in Pee-Wee’s Big adventure, playing the part of the nasty biker bar! Sweet!

But wherever you are, when Social Studies rolls through your town, cancel your plans and catch them where you can. They put on a great show, and this is a record we are really excited about.

Social Studies

Social Studies craft intricate songs that combine angular indie rock and classic twee-pop. What distinguishes the San Francisco-based group is their eclectic, complex song writing: unusual structures and mathy beats are tempered by soft edges and danceable casio hooks. Moody, defiant and hopeful, the lyrics celebrate duality through themes of discontent, violence, innocence, renewal, nostalgia, regret and joy. All these elements take shape in unpredictable, catchy songs that burrow into your consciousness and demand repeat listening and a critical reading between the lines. Combine this imaginative songwriting with a consistently high energy live show, and it is no surprise that Social Studies has generated a loyal fanbase and strong buzz in the SF Bay Area and beyond.

At the core of Social Studies are Natalia Rogovin on keyboards and vocals, and Michael Jirkovsky on drums. Natalia spent her youth on a commune in rural Oregon and trained to be a classical pianist, while Michael grew up in Chicago and cut his teeth on the Chicago punk scene. The two met in college in Santa Cruz and assembled Social Studies upon graduating and moving to the SF Bay Area a couple of years later.

Social Studies has built their local following while serving as an incubator for talented San Francisco musicians; members of bands like Maus Haus, Tempo No Tempo, and the Lovely Public have passed through their ranks. In mid-2009, the band recruited Jesse Hudson (formerly of Dealership and the product of a musical family whose father played with the likes of Joan Baez and Jorma Kaukonen) on bass. He was quickly followed by a former bandmate of Michael’s, Tom Smith, (of noted Chicago bands Office and Mazes) on guitar, finalizing their permanent lineup.

ANT533 – Social Studies – Wind Up Wooden Heart

Antenna Farm Records is pleased to present Wind Up Wooden Heart, the long-awaited debut album from San Francisco’s Social Studies. WUWH is a study in contradictions, a balance of twee-leaning danceable pop and bold, progressive song structures that eschew verse/chorus/verse boundaries; in short, it is a perfect representation of Social Studies and stands as one of the breakthrough debut albums of 2010. With several US tours and a self released EP under their belt, the band turned their attention to producing a full-length release that would balance the intricacy of their songs with the intensity of their high-energy live show. In between sharing stages with the likes of The Pipettes, The Long Blondes and Handsome Furs, the band spent much of 2009 recording and producing a full-length that pushed their lovably eccentric songwriting skills to new heights.

The result, Wind Up Wooden Heart, tempers the experimental lines of Deerhoof with a love of unadulterated pop songwriting and heightens the arching melodies of Beach House with dramatic twists and turns. With consistently catchy melodies, Natalia’s enchanting voice, and special guest appearances by members of Bright Eyes, Dreamdate, and Thee More Shallows, Social Studies have crafted an album that’s equally infectious and innovative.

In ten tracks the band constructs a prophetic future that upon closer look is crumbling with nostalgia and regret. And as if to mirror the contradictory themes of violence, discontent, camaraderie, and renewal that run through the album, the songs themselves balance catchy and danceable melodies with sinewy structures and complicated turns. Wind Up Wooden Heart is pop music fully realized for a modern era, and it’s a debut LP that begs to be talked about, sung along to, and played on repeat. It announces Social Studies as a band ready to break out into the national consciousness.
