Totally Splodin!

Well now we've done it. A couple of sneakily leaked tracks off the upcoming Je Suis France album have made their way onto the internets and we'll be damned if they aren't kicking up a ruckus. Amongst the highlights, a positive post at Idolator, an absolutely J'adorable review at CubPop, and even a song posting on a tiny little weblog you might have heard of called Pitchfork. 3000 streams in 72 hours....Raucous to say the least. And still more than 6 weeks til Afrikan Majik hits the streets. But don't worry, pre-orders coming soon...or even better, support your local record store and start pestering them to order this title right away.

Meanwhile Still Flyin' are once again rocking Sweden. I don't know what's cooler, that even as I sit here writing this they're playing an auditorium in a cave....nestled in a freaking mountain ...or the fact that Still Flyin' made the overseas trek in several waves, and OJ from the France got to make several trips to party with them at the Atlanta airport bar. Nothing like a few 8 dollar beers to make you appreciate the social democracy of Northern Europe. Stay tuned for their new EP, the Za Cloud EJ, in stores May 29.

South By Southdamaged

Hey kids, welcome to another dispatch from the Antenna Farm editors. Following another excellent South By Southwest with stellar (if totally short) sets from AF (and AF affilliated) artists Sugar & Gold, Bart Davenport, and Saturday Looks Good To Me, we returned to Oakland, ready to recover and cut down on the grilled meats and hard liquor. At least for a few days.

The finishing touches are done on Sugar & Gold's debut album, Creme and the release date is June 12th. Nearly an hour of pumping jams destined to be your summer soundtrack, you can preview some of the tunes here. Over-acheivers that they are, S&G have been behind the boards handling production duties for some tracks on the upcoming Gravy Train!!! album due out in July. Stay tuned for shared tour dates with both bands, coming soon!

2007 - Crystal Balls

Well kids, 2006 has passed into the ether and I can safely say that our long national nightmare is over. The year passed like a bad trip with a couple of high points and a few nasty surprises right there at the end (R.I.P. J.B.!) but we can cast aside the doom and gloom and look towards a warm (much, much warmer!) future.

Sugar and Gold continue to bring the jams and they totally devastated the Bay Area in a series of hott year end shows. Our supply of their WorkOut 12" vinyls is dwindling, the shops just can't keep them in stock. Get yours now or be left out in the cold. Their album is mastered and going into production, keep an eye out for the Creme full length in April.

Meanwhile the Chicken on a Raft debut album has been discovered by the indie and radio crowd, and is dividing the traditional folk crowd with their revisionist take on some American and British classics. See what the fuss is all about and check out a couple of tunes from their album here.

In other news for 2007 the crystal ball is showing a new EP from Still Flyin' and the third full length from Athens brain melters, Je Suis France, called Afrikan Majick. These will be part of those April showers purported to bring us them May flowers. More on those presently. Further down the road I can see a new full length from Antenna Farm stalwart Helene Renaut and Beam, as well as the inimitable Bart Davenport taking a break from his Honeycut duties to deliver a new, long-awaited album of originals. What else? Rumblings of new full lengths from a couple of long time Bay Area heavy Hitters late in the year (too soon to let you in on the news, but it's big...) as well as a return to SXSW this spring. So stay tuned.

Finally, one last development, Antenna Farm has signed a partnership deal with digital jukebox network, Ecast. Now you can listen to your favorite Antenna Farm artist at any of the 8500 venues across the country that features an Ecast digital jukebox, so get out there have a drink, jam some tunes and take our best wishes for a happy 2007!

Purple State Update

Greetings flower children and welcome to another installment of the Antenna Farm News update. Things are unseasonably cheery and optimistic around the AF compound up here on Kempton ridge in the heart of Oakland, and it doesn't just have to do with a certain pop singer fed-exing her problems away (though it helps.) No, we're looking at a hopeful vision for the future and we've got some new records to help you and your newly minted purple state celebrate the age of consensus.

First off, there's the debut album by Chicken on a Raft, out November 14. Made up of Thom Moore (Moore Brothers) and Tommy Carns (a solo performer in his own right) COAR play a collection of British and American folk traditionals, songs that are stories of love and loss, as true today when first sung so many years ago. Find it at your local roots-music emporium, your favorite MP3 retailer, or here at the AF store.

Second up is the long awaited album from Sarah White and the Pearls. Five years in the making, White Light is a collection of strong originals from Ms White and her new backing band. Classic California folk rock never felt so rough and soothing all at once. Like Chicken on a Raft, available now in your favorite format at the retailer of your choice.

And now that we've been handed the keys to the city, the work begins. So what's in store for 2007? Well the Spring has some treasures in the form of the debut Sugar and Gold album, and if you haven't checked out their bangin 12 inch vinyl yet, it might be time to make the booty call. Also on the horizon, a new full length from our friend Helene Renaut and Beam. How about a new Still Flyin EP to get you moving? And finally, we're stoked to announce the signing of Je Suis France, whose third full length will be out on AF this spring. For those of you unfamiliar with the phenomenon, JSF was the original genesis for Still Flyin, and is an incredible mix of Kraut rock, Afro-beat, and straigt-up early 80s prog-rock/pop. Prepare to have your little mind blown, my friend.

And until next time, keep the love coming!

"S" Stands For...

Summer is almost over, the kids are headed back to school, and your friends at Antenna Farm are gearing up for some serious fall releases. We're putting the finishing touches on albums from Sarah White and local murder balladeers Chicken on a Raft. But more on those two later cuz for now, today's letter is "S"

Still Flyin' is back from Sweden and a series of festivals where, as legend has it, they levitated our Nordic neighbors into a higher state of consciousness. Or something like that. Either way, they're back and sharing a gig at SF's venerable Hemlock next Sunday (Sept 3) with Antenna Farmer Helene Renaut of Beam. Should be a gas, and not just because it's your chance to pick up the brand new vinyl version of the Time Wrinkle EJ. Just to show our love for the last inimitable format, we packed this vinyl full of a B-side of dubs, swelling it out to a full length album. If you can't make it in person, order a copy from the AF store or find it at your local cool record shoppe.

Speaking of seeing the band, now the whole world can join in the Still Flyin' experience by checking their video for Rope Burn, directed by Architecture in Helsinki's Isobel Knowles. Burnin'

In other S related news, Sugar and Gold's 12" single for Work Out and Do it Well is hitting the streets this week, so grab your fire extinguisher, cuz they're going to burn this disco down. This is really just a teaser for their full length, coming out in early 2007, but with 4 remixes, this should be enough to keep you moving on right through the fall. Again, check the AF store or your local vinyl oriented retailer.

Finally, it's not too late to vote for the Donkeys as "best alternative band" in the 16th annual San Diego Music awards. I know you've been burned voting before, but this time it's for real. Vote online at http://www.sandiegomusicawards.com/

That is all for now friends.

Still Flyin' in Sweden, Donkeys on Daytrotter

So it's finally starting to cool down after the hottest few days in recent memory here in the New Bay but don't bust out those sweaters just yet, there's still plenty of hottt yet to come. First, we'll be seeing Still Flyin' vinyl in just a couple weeks, just in time for their tour of Sweden. They'll be rockin the festival circuit there, blowing some Nordic minds. Also on tap in short order, the Sugar and Gold Workout 12" record, tailor made for the last holdout vinyl DJs (ipod djs suck, sorry!) but open to consumption for anyone who urgently needs to shake it. Both of these bad boys might have started life as eps, but quickly swelled to a lenght that demands 33 1/3, so line up and get some bang for your buck.

And Donkeys fans can find a cool new version of Come On Virginia as well as a couple new songs (Walk Through a Cloud and Living on the Other Side) recorded specifically for the ever cool Daytrotter site, check them here.

Ok friends, that is all, remember to stay cool. Around here we use ice for that.

Plastic Surgery Disasters

Oh man, we're in the thick of summer and while everyone else is frolicking in the grass and sea, you're inside, attached to your computer. Could it be a case of the Summertime Blues? Well, my friend, I think we may have the cure in the form of a cd EP we're unleashing on the world this July: The debut EP from Still Flyin' the Time Wrinkle EJ. If you haven't heard, Still Flyin' is a 15 piece rotating collective Rocksteady outfit from San Francisco. With members of Aislers Set, Lowercase, Ladybug Transistor, and more, this supergroup cannot be stopped. Their cd EP was recorded by Jason Quever (Papercuts) at his Pan American Studio and it captures a snapshot of their joyfully chaotic live show, which you can check out for yourself at their record release show July 13 at SF's 12 Galaxies. And the truly faithful should stay tuned for a vinyl version with 6 extra dub versions on the B-side coming in a couple months. Never Gonna Touch the Ground!

Speaking of vinyl, the final steps are in place for a Sugar and Gold 12 inch single that will be gracing your wheels of steel within 2 months time. You might recognize S&G's core from bands like the Connexion and even Dura-Delinquent, but it's 2006 and these cats have literally squeezed some groovy coal into a straight funk diamond. Workout takes the precision funk and electro of Phoenix, and douses it with Some-Girls era Rolling Stones soul...making for a jam that is going to wear it's grooves out before it comes off your turntable. And stay tuned for the full length album this fall.

And finally, those of you who have faithfully followed the Antenna Farm saga from the early days are probably noting a massive site overhaul, sucessfully undertaken by AF's master of all things web, Jill K. Like any growing family, there comes a time when your current digs just aren't big enough to accomodate all of your friends and lovers and you gotta find a new place to hang your heads. Well, we got it, but we're not quite done yet. Keep your eyes open for some new surprises in the coming weeks, did someone mention an Antenna Farm Radio Player, featuring more of your fave AF artists as well as unreleased and rare cuts? Stay tuned, friends.

Records to Change Your Life

Peoples, peoples got to get over before we go under. We all know we need a brand new funky president....But in the meantime we just got to work with what we got, and as I write this I got 2 records that may not save the world but might bring these dark days a little more light.

First is Michael Talbott and The Wolfkings, whose mystique and notoriety has been building to a fever pitch with the imminent release of their debut album Freeze-Die-Come to Life. To get an idea of what people are talking about, check out Michael's site, complete with a radio player featuring exclusive songs and press ready photos.

On April 27th, the city of San Francisco will be treated to a massive event sponsored by the SF Bay Guardian, celebrating the record's release at Mighty (119 Utah St) featuring Last of the Blacksmiths, Citay, Broker/Dealer, DJ Jefrodesiac, and coolest of all, an exhibition of original artwork by Nat Russell, the wunderkind behind the artwork for Freeze-Die-Come To Life.

Second on the list of soul reviving elixirs is the Donkeys, who fresh off their tour with Casiotone for the Painfully Alone are releasing a debut album that is in the running for the feelgood record of the spring. These guys lull you in with the kind of record where each new song is your new favorite, packed with soul, yearning, despair and joy....and some freakouts too. We'll never think San Diego the same way again.

Get on the Yacht!

Greetings from the New Bay, friends I know you got yr thizz on. You know we do, what with the new Paul Bertolino album providing some serious aural ecstacy...but don't take our word for it. All Music Guide seriously dug on Inner Soundtrack, calling it an ambitious album of vintage sunshine pop and managing to namecheck both Burt Bacharach and Prince! Read the review here.

In other happenings, we want to let you know, the rumors are true, we are doing a record with Still Flyin', and that's the truth, ruth. In case you haven't heard about this SF Indie-Dub-Rocksteady-Supergroup yet, click here and here for some choice words on the matter. Suffice it to say we agree with SF Weekly Music Editor Garrett Kamps' asessment of the group: "Still Flyin' is a sweet-ass band." Look for a 6 song cdep this June with a limited vinyl platter stuffed with dub versions of the ep tracks coming soon after. I and I Survive.

Meanwhile, the Donkeys are finishing up their US tour supporting Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, creating art and breaking hearts all along the way. Their album is out of control and they're moving so many units on tour we may have to repress before the official release date hits. If you missed them on the road, look for this self-titled phenomenon in May in a store near you.

Well kids, that's all for now, so until we meet again, Stop Snitching!
