Emily Jane White is currently in Japan, on a two week tour, and preparing for the June 12th release of her third album, Ode To Sentience. In the meantime, she’s announcing a set of east and west coast US shows for June. Without further ado, here they are:

Bart Davenport has just released the video for Cheap Words, the B-side to his new Someone2Dance 7″, and it’s a beautiful montage of the sights of downtown Los Angeles at night…a perfect match for Sam Flax‘s synth-driven minimalist production on the track, itself a reduction of earlier pop versions of the song more in line with Cheap Words’ running themes of isolation and loneliness, wasted love and alienation. 

Produced by the very talented Peter Rubi, and featuring Erin Weber, the video for Cheap Words is a paean to the desolation of skid row, both on the streets of Los Angeles and as part of a modern love affair. Wasted love indeed. Watch Now.

To start, they’re announcing a short string of California dates for early May, in a support slot for Ramona Falls (Barsuk Records). But even better, the band has just finished recording their new album, as-yet un-named, but due for release later this year. Mixing is almost complete and we’ve heard a few of the finished cuts…just one word: AWESOME.

The band has launched a kickstarter campaign to fund the recording of the album, and they’ve put together some amazing music and artwork packages for the folks that give a hand. They’re a week into it and have raised just under half of their $7000 goal. If you were a fan of their 2010 album, Wind Up Wooden Heart, you’re going to be rocked by these new songs.

Of course, Californians can check things out first hand, as Social Studies head out on the road next week to preview a handul of these new songs for you personally!

Requiem Waltz is a dark meditation on loss and helplessness in the face of destructive acts by the ones we love…with a haunting piano motif throughout. Emily describes the origins of the song, courtesy of American Songwriter:

““Requiem Waltz was originally written on guitar, but I later re-wrote it for the piano and liked that version much better. Once the song was finished I presented it to Carey Lamprecht [violin] and Jen Grady [cello] during a rehearsal in Jen’s livingroom, and together they came up with the beautiful string arrangement. I think we performed it for the first time that very same summer at a show with The Mumlers at The Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco.”

Emily Jane White’s third album, Ode To Sentience is her most realized work to date. Drawing upon finger-picked folk, traditional country, classical music and rock, White creates an expansive space for her intuitive lyrics and elegiac vocals. Ode To Sentience will be released in the United States on June 12th, 2012.

Finally, Bay Area folks can catch Emily Jane White playing a free show this Wednesday (4/25) at the Guerrero Gallery in SF, part of the Artists Living Room Series. The show starts at 7, and Emily opens for Release the Sunbird, the new project from Zach Rougue (of Rougue Wave). Again, this show is free, but you need to RSVP for entry. Do it HERE.

Recorded in San Francisco back in February during one of their special Noise Pop sessions, the intrepid Sean Moeller and his crew captured 4 songs from Emily’s upcoming album release, Ode To Sentience live in the studio. And as is par for the Daytrotter course, these tracks capture the urgency of live performance (no over-dubs ever allowed!) but with the crisp high fidelity of a top gear studio session.

Other artists who have recorded great Daytrotter sessions read like a who’s who of modern music greats: Fleet Foxes, Wire, Bon Iver, Cowboy Junkies, MGMT, Dinosaur JR, and many more have done DT sessions, as well as Antenna Farm artists Agent Ribbons, Bart Davenport, The Botticellis, The Donkeys, and Papercuts. For the uninitiated, Pomplamoose is a wildly inventive 2 piece band that has made a name for themselves through a series of DIY videos posted to their youtube channel. These have built a huge audience over the past 3 years. So when we heard that Jack was a fan of Foxtails Brigade and was shooting a series of 4 videos for them, we couldn’t wait to see them. It was worth the wait. Without further comment, here is Foxtails Brigade doing “Don’t Look Down“.
